Acne Anatomy

The human’s body is covered with hair which is made inside the skin by the hair follicle. Sebaceous gland produces an oily substance called sebum. The sebum leaks onto the skin through the opening of the follicle. Sebum is an oily substance secreted by sebaceous glands of the skin of mammals. Its main objective is to make the skin and hair and waterproof to protect them from drying out. An excess of sebum, however, can make the skin or hair oily. Also it begins to smell when broken down by bacteria outside the body. The sebaceous glands are usually attached to hair follicles, but they also exist in certain areas of the hairless body, such as the eyelids, where they add sebum to tears to keep the moisture in the eye.
